Big Belly Project
Illustration | Environmental Design
This project was in collaboration with the West Chester Township Committee. The goal was to beautify center city by creating vinyl wraps to be put on the Big Belly Receptacles. These trash receptacles are located throughout West Chester and play a major role in keeping the city clean. Each Big Belly is able to hold 5 times the size of the average trash bin. While holding an abundant amount of waste, they also help cut down on carbon emissions allowing trash trucks to make collection runs less frequently. The machines accomplish this by using industrial solar powered compactors, which allows the bin to hold up to 150 gallons of waste.
The Machine
The concept behind the design I created was to focus on the power of the machine itself. My goal was to implement a design that would stand out and draw attention, especially because it would be presented on an object that quite often is taken for granted and over looked. The final application design was directed toward the inventiveness of the mind of a child and how things can be seen from many different perspectives.
Invoking the imagination of the viewer was the overall goal. I wanted people who come across this machine to stop and contemplate how it actually works and helps in everyday life. While the facts behind this machine are astonishing, the ideas presented is where the fun begins.
